Learn about Japanese tools like the kanna (planes)\, nokogiri (handsaws)\, and sumitsubo (measuring lines). Enjoy hands-on activities for the whole family!  *Drop-in anytime between 10am to 4pm. Saturday only. \n \n  \n June 7 (Sunday)\, 2026 @ 11am and 2pm – Heritage Conservation Talk & Tour **\nJoin Heritage Consultant Elana Zysblat\, CAHP\, ICOMOS for a behind-the-scenes tour of the newly restored Britannia Shipyard building. \nExplore the historical significance of this building and its evolution from cannery to shipyard to national historic site. Hear the story of the recent restoration project: The team\, the materials used\, the challenges and discoveries\, and how the entire project was guided by national standards for conservation. \n** Tour length: 45 minutes. Recommended for adults or children with adult supervision. The walking tour will cover some areas with uneven wooden floorboards which may be challenging for guests with mobility concerns. \n Register here for the tour. Limited capacity. SUMMARY:Westcoast Work Boat Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the docks of Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site as we host the Westcoast Work Boat Association (WWBA) for a gathering of their members in Steveston. \nThe WWBA is a group of work boat enthusiasts who have dedicated their time and efforts to restore or convert former working vessels for pleasure cruising. Many of the members’ vessels include tugboats\, forestry and fishery boats. \nVisitors may get a closeup view of the workboats on display at the docks (access times 12 to 4pm Saturday and Sunday July 18 & 19\, 2026). \nBoat captains will be on hand to talk about their vessels’ fascinating history of working along the West Coast. \nStop by Richmond Boat Builders for an interactive exploration of wooden boat building. Discover tools and techniques from the Western and Japanese boatbuilding traditions\, and try your hand at a boatbuilding tool challenge!
