Lunar New Year at Britannia Shipyards

Three red and yellow paper lanterns displayed on old wooden background, with 6 lucky red envelopes

Visit the Chinese Bunkhouse from February 10 to 25, 2024, to pay homage to the customs and symbols of the Lunar New Year. Try calligraphy and personalize a bookmark with phrases and characters of good luck. Learn about the Chinese zodiac and each of their characteristics. And, to commemorate the Lantern Festival ending of the Lunar New Year, find traditional riddles hanging from lanterns throughout the building for visitors to solve!

The Chinese Bunkhouse at Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site once housed up to 100 Chinese labourers who worked for a salmon cannery in northern BC. Today, visitors can experience a recreation of their cramped sleeping quarters, and learn stories of hope, hardship and contributions during the heyday of the fishing and canning industry in Steveston.

Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site invites you to join us in embracing the rich traditions of the Lunar New Year through hands-on activities for visitors of all ages to welcome in the Year of the Dragon.

February 10th – February 25th, 2024 in the Chinese Bunkhouse

Open: 10am-4pm, Tuesday – Sunday (closed Monday)

Admission is free.
