Celebrate World Rivers Day at Britannia Shipyards: Honouring the Fraser River’s Legacy
Sunday, September 22nd, 12 – 4 p.m. | Seine Net Loft | Free Admission
This World Rivers Day, join us as we celebrate the vital role that rivers play in our environment and community.
On Sunday, September 22nd, from 12 to 4 pm (free drop-in), special guests Ocean Wise will join us in the Seine Net Loft to present an interactive display about our local waterways and to raise awareness of the incredible Fraser River ecosystem.
The Fraser River has long been the backbone of the west coast fishing industry. For over a century, it has supported one of the most productive commercial salmon fisheries in the world, providing livelihoods to generations of fishermen and shaping the community around Britannia Shipyards and Steveston. The river has sustained industries developed in this region, with canneries and shipyards relying on its bounty. Today, the Fraser River remains central to the heritage we preserve at the site, reflecting its critical role in our shared history and the need for ongoing environmental stewardship.
Learn about the rich biodiversity of the Fraser River and how we can work together to protect it. Explore Ocean Wise’s educational displays to discover ways to keep our waters healthy, and to celebrate the unique role the Fraser River plays in our lives.
Also in the Seine Net Loft, look for a fun fishing-net sorting activity, and find out about the different materials that are used to make the nets, their recyclability, and the importance of sustainable practices in keeping our waters clean.
