An annual tradition to create a childhood memory
The holidays are near and Santa is waiting for the first letters of the season to arrive. The Steveston Museum and Post Office’s charming heritage building is the ideal place to introduce your child to the letter-writing tradition with a letter to Santa.
Have you heard about Canada Post’s Letters to Santa program? For over 40 years, retired Canada Post employees, or “postal elves”, have helped Santa sort through one million letters every year. The letters let Santa know how the child is doing, and what their hopes and wishes for the holidays may be. And, if the letter is sent before the deadline, they can expect a reply from Santa’s workshop! This year’s deadline is December 6, 2024.
Find our special “Santa Mail Box” in the Steveston Museum (in the room behind the post office) where children can mail their letters to Santa. Or, the letters can be placed in your neighbourhood mailbox, just like regular mail.
These days, most children (and even adults) have never written a letter to someone. Writing a letter to Santa is a good way to encourage children to learn how to write letters. To make this easy, Canada Post offers easy to fill-in letter samples on their website, or you can visit the Steveston Museum to fill out letters available next to the special Santa mailbox (limited to children 12 years old and younger).
Teachers may be interested to know that their class writes to Santa, he will reply with a class poster including all of the students’ names.
Canada Post also has tips for international letter writers to ensure that international letters are replied to in the language that they are written in.

You don’t need a stamp if mailed from Canada, but please include your return address! And don’t forget to mail your letter before the cut off date of Monday, December 6, 2024.
