Lunar new Year Celebrations in the Chinese Bunkhouse
January 29 marks the beginning of the Lunar New Year, a festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar. According to the Chinese zodiac, this year is the Year of the Snake, said to bring wisdom, transformation, calmness and creativity.
On Saturdays and Sundays Jan 25 & 26 and Feb 1 & 2 , visit the Chinese Bunkhouse to enjoy free activities that honour the Lunar New Year, a holiday that is celebrated worldwide.
Learn about the Chinese zodiac, try calligraphy, and customize your own souvenir book mark. Look for bright red lanterns hanging around the building with riddles to solve.
The Chinese Bunkhouse at Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site once housed up to 100 Chinese labourers who worked for a salmon cannery in northern BC. Today, visitors can experience a recreation of their cramped living quarters, and learn stories of hope, hardship and contributions during the heyday of the fishing and canning industry in Steveston.
