A project update from shipwright Dave Sharp
We’ve welcomed an extra set of hands into the shop lately; Simon Tribble is an experienced carpenter with a focus on heritage home renovations.
The picket stern structure is complete, and we have installed a pair of new 2×6 yellow cedar stringers on each side to tie the stern into the rest of the boat. The stringers are about 13’ long and we’ve been lucky to find good wood at the original scarph joints on both sides to tie into.

The original hull going forward from this point (about mid-ship) is generally in much better shape than the aft end, with the hull frames and a lot of the planking looking pretty good. Here’s a video showing the steam bending of the horizontal ribs for the stern:
We’ve steamed 36 new oak frames into the hull and have re-framed the whole hull aft of the wheelhouse. Once the new ribs are fine-tuned and bolted into the stringers, we’ll be ready to start looking at some new red cedar hull planks.
