Shaping the Bulwarks

The restoration team has been working hard to plank the Crystal S from the keel up. Dave and his team are moving past the garboard planks for now, continuing with the straighter sections that don’t require steam to curve.

The bulwarks, which are the extension of the ship’s sides above the level of the deck, are taking shape.

Made from yellow cedar, the first 3” layer has been installed around the boat. They will build the forward sections of the bulwark up to a height of around 14”. Once the bulwarks and planks have been installed, the restoration team will begin framing the aft decks using yellow cedar.

Additionally, a pair of 2” douglas fir stringers have been added to the cockpit area. This will support the ship when it is eventually moved by the slings of a travel lift.
