An Update from the Crystal S Restoration Project from Shipwright Dave Sharp

We have a large swath of side planking done now, both port and starboard, and we’re starting to get into some bottom planks. One of these images shows a couple of the old garboard planks that we’ve taken off for replacement and just how much twist and bend they have in them, so we will need the steam box to help fit the new pieces.

With the top-most planks installed all around the boat now, we’ve been able to fair in the sheer line . This line runs from bow to stern, represents the outer edge of the decks and is the most noticeable line on the finished boat, so it’s important to have a fair line that’s pleasing to the eye.

We’ve also built a new net roller using a few of the old parts.

Our next steps will be to start stacking the bulwark timbers; the first 3” layer of yellow cedar runs all the way around the boat, then we’ll build up layers around the bow to bring the height up to about 14”, with an aim to re-use the original gumwood caps to top them off.
