Imagine what it was like to work on the Steveston waterfront over one hundred years ago, the cannery channel full of fishing boats, and the shores lined with canneries producing thousands of cans of prized Pacific salmon for export overseas. The Voyage of the Gikumi is a two-hour tour on what was once a working westcoast vessel, built in 1954 to service the BC forest industry. Now beautifully restored by captain John Turpin, we were pleased to offer our guided heritage tours on the MV Gikumi, around the historic cannery channel with views of Steveston’s fishing port, Garry Point Park and Shady Island, up to Ladner and Deas Island.
The tours begin at the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site, where our heritage interpreters set the stage for the engaging stories of the diverse communities that shaped the fishing, canning and boat building communities of Steveston, before embarking on a tour of the Fraser River estuary. Check back for details for our summer 2023 tours; a must for those who seek to experience what life may have been like on the Fraser.
