Winter Tram Lights Up the Holiday Season

Steveston Tram building decorated with line of illuminated fir trees, giant wreath and selfie frame

Light up your holidays this season with a visit to “Winter Tram,” part of the annual Winter in the Village in Steveston. From December 1 to 31, create memories with family activities and enjoy gorgeous light displays for picture-perfect moments.

Holiday Scavenger Hunts

Inside the Steveston Tram museum, children can take part in two different scavenger hunts. The first invites children to explore Tram Car 1220 and the museum exhibits to discover items from clues that reveal connections to childhood winters of the past.

The second is a daily quest to find our holiday “Hamm on the Tram”. Hamm is a pig stuffy who enjoys moving around the museum every day. Read the clues to help search for Hamm’s changing locations. Children will receive a commemorative bookmark on their first visit, to track the number of times they have discovered Hamm’s location. “Hamm on the Tram” will continue throughout December

LEGO Heritage Village Display

Local LEGO creator Peter Grant has created another window display inspired by these four heritage buildings from Richmond communities:

  • The Pioneer Church, an important landmark from the Gilmore neighbourhood,
  • McKinney House, a fine example of a Craftsman-influenced Edwardian-style home that housed one of Steveston’s first settler families,
  • the 1930s Craftsman-influenced Ransford House that embodies Steveston farmhouses all but lost, and
  • the Queen Anne revival style of the Parsons House at Terra Nova that both European and Japanese settler families called home.
“Polar Express” Story Time

In an annual tradition, librarians from the Richmond Public Library will read the holiday classic, “The Polar Express”, on board the beautifully restored 112-year old Tram Car 1220.

Story times are on Saturday, December 7 and Sunday, December 15 at 2:00pm, 2:40pm, and 3:20pm. Tickets are free at the door and open 15 minutes before each session. Tickets are available first-come first-served as each reading is limited to 30 seats.

You can also find “The Polar Express” and other books about trains and trams in multiple languages at any time in December in our cozy reading corner.

Festive Illuminations

This year, a large illuminated tree will be displayed at the entrance of Steveston Village courtesy of Tourism Richmond. Join us for a tree-lighting ceremony at 4:30pm on Sunday December 1, on the plaza in front of the Steveston Tram at the corner of No.1 Road and Moncton Street.

From December 1st, visitors can also enjoy a brightly-lit avenue of illuminated fir trees, a giant holiday wreath and golden “selfie” frame to capture a picture-perfect holiday memory in front of the Steveston Tram.

While in the area, visit the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site’s Festival of Trees , just a short walk from the Steveston Tram. Explore the many trees decorated by local business and organizations and vote for your favourite (keep an eye out for the Steveston Heritage Sites’ tree, including images and items related to Tram Car 1220).

The Steveston Tram is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm from December 1 to 31. It is closed on statutory holidays. Admission is free. Bring your friends and family and make new holiday memories.
