An Update from the Crystal S Restoration Project
Shipwright Dave Sharp describes a mix of old and new resources used in this next step of the Crystal S boat restoration.
Using some of our 6”x12” yellow cedar timber stock, the starboard side of the lower stern ring is taking shape.

These photos (above) show the lower forward ring timber and the knee being shaped, fit and bolted in place, using some of the old-stock bolts from Sakamoto Boatworks.
Since these timbers are below the waterline, a thin thread of caulking cotton is wrapped around the head of each bolt to prevent water creeping through.

The image above illustrates the use of the nokogiri (Japanese saw)to fine tune the large mitre joint between the old and new ring timbers.

A thin cedar batten is used to establish the proper outer curve of the new ring timber.
