Crystal S Project – Steam Bent Wood

An Update from the Crystal S Restoration Project

Shipwright Dave Sharp describes the next step in restoring the stern of the Crystal S .

There are a few photos here showing the installation of the vertical red cedar pickets going across the stern. Some of these also have to be steam-bent, as they come around the curve of the transom. They have a considerable twist to them, which need the help of steam.

Also a couple of photos of the new yellow cedar bulkhead taking shape. Simon is laying out the curves with a batten to shape the first lower pieces of the bulkhead structure. The subsequent timbers will be stacked up and fastened together in the traditional Japanese style, using a bent nail and umeki plug.
