Did you know that February 4th is celebrated as “Transit Equity Day ” in the U.S. (also known as “Rosa Parks Day”) in honour of the birthday of Rosa Parks? In 1955, Parks made history when she refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama. This everyday act of courage helped spark the modern civil rights movement and forever linked public transit with the fight for justice.

During Black History Month, Transit Equity Day offers a moment to think about how public transportation may shape daily life and community. At the Steveston Tram Museum, we share stories of how local transit connected people from all backgrounds to their work and waterfront life in Steveston. Stories like these help us understand why fair and accessible transportation is important for everyone.
