Tourism Richmond recognized the Heritage Boat Restoration Project at Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site with the “Excellence Award for Innovation” at the EPIC Tourism Awards in 2025.
This project allows visitors an up-close look at live heritage boat restoration in the Richmond Boat Builders workshop, originally built by the Kishi Japanese Canadian boat building family in Steveston.
Tourists from around the world have visited the site to learn about the history of Japanese Canadian boat-building tradition. Many have had the opportunity to chat with shipwright Dave Sharp about the current restoration work on the Crystal S. The project is also a very popular draw for school groups visiting from throughout Metro Vancouver.
We are excited to offer more public programs and events around this project in Spring and Summer 2026.
