Tram meets Bus

Honk if you love buses! Honk even louder if you love trams!

On Saturday, October 3, 2026, we will celebrate Culture Days 2026 with the BC Transit Museum who will bring its 1957 GM Museum bus to Steveston. From 12 to 4pm, enjoy this rare opportunity to climb aboard a moving piece of BC history as part of Tram Meets Bus: From Rails to Rubber. You can find the museum bus on No. 1 Road at Moncton Street, next to Steveston Tram.

Just a few metres away, inside the Steveston Tram Museum, you can explore Tram Car 1220 built in 1913, and experience transit from an even earlier time. Buses like the Transit Museum’s bus eventually replaced trams in this region as they were phased out during the 1940s and 1950s.

Fun Activities to Enjoy

There’s plenty more to see and do at Steveston Tram Museum, open all day with free admission, from 10am to 5pm.

What kind of public transit do you think we’ll use 100 years from now to get around Richmond? Add your ideas to our large map mural activity. Then vote for your favourite type of transit from the past: horse and carriage, tram, or bus. (Pssst! We’re hoping the tram will win!)

Find Out More About Trams and the Tram Model Makers

Continue your visit by chatting with our friendly and knowledgeable volunteers, who can tell you more about the vast tram system that helped shape the Richmond community we know today.

You’ll also have a chance to meet some of the teenagers who designed and built the Tram’s temporary model display. Their working miniature tram runs through a landscape inspired by Richmond in 1930. Ask them about their inspiration, the challenges they faced, and what they learned while building their model.

Receive a Free Vintage Copy of The Buzzer

As a special bonus, the first 50 individuals and groups to arrive will receive a vintage copy of The Buzzer, the local transit newsletter. This 1990 issue celebrated 100 years of transit in BC.

Tram Meets Bus: From Rails to Rubber is part of Culture Days, Canada’s largest celebration of arts, culture, and heritage. Culture Days runs from September 18 to October 4, 2026 and includes events in Richmond and communities across Canada.

The Steveston Tram will be open on October 3 from 10am to 5pm, with the vintage bus available for boarding from 12pm to 4pm. We hope you’ll join us for a fun day of historic transit, hands-on activities, and a look at the way we travel has changed—and where it might go next!
