Crystal S – Summer Recap

white glossy paint on aft of wooden boat

As we near completion of the Crystal S restoration project, here are some images to take us through the process of what has been worked on these past few months.

The above photos show the following work done on the cockpit and deck of Crystal S. Yellow cedar deck beams, carlins and jack-beams (or half beams) are fastened together using galvanized carriage bolts from Sakamoto Boatworks and a combination of tapered mortise joints and half-lapped dovetails. The two cockpit deck openings (oval and rectangular, pictured) were framed to accommodate the original hatches.

These three photos show the decking material made of 1 1/8 ” x 2 3/4” edge grain red cedar and caulked with one thread of cotton and filled (or payed) with a modern black polysulphide rubber compound.

The final five photos show that we’ve done some filling and fairing of the hull prior to paint, making sure to keep some of the workboat character in the final finish. A straight, fair waterline is established and the hull topsides painted with two coats of primer and three coats of a modern polyurethane enamel paint.

Finally, the wheelhouse exterior surfaces, forward decks and inside of the bulwark have been sanded, filled and painted, including a custom color match of the original “Crystal S Green”
