Finishing the Hull

Front view of Crystal S restoration

When these photos were taken in March 2026, only one plank remained to be placed on the starboard side, and five remaining on the port side of the hull, which is the body of the boat that keeps it afloat. The planks that form the tight curve of the bilge will be scooped on the inside face. This will help them better conform to the curve of the hull.

The bulwark structure, which is the section of planking above the water and upper deck, is now complete. This style of bulwark is called a “stacked bulwark”; it is made up of 56 individual 3-inch yellow cedar timbers, rough cut with a band saw and shaped by hand. The bulwark structure is then “faired” (made perfectly smooth) and finished in place on the boat, using a power plane and sander.

The next step on the foredeck will be to mount the anchor hardware. See photo below for the finished installation.
