On July 1st, stop by the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site during Steveston Salmon Festival, just a few minutes’ scenic walk away from the village.
Visit the Restored Shipyard Building
After a year of restoration work, the Britannia shipyard building has re-opened. Tour the former shipyard’s workshops, originally built as a salmon cannery in 1889. Kids 8 years + can ask for a scavenger hunt to help explore the building.
The Docks are Open
The south deck of the shipyard opens to the public as of July 1st, allowing visitors to walk along the boat dock. Soak in the Fraser River views of Steveston Harbour and Shady Island. See the wooden boats up close, including the resident SS Master tug boat, Silver Ann gillnetter, and visiting wooden vessels the Bianca and the MV Saffron. More information about these four boats can be found here.
Leave a Wish for Tanabata
Learn about the annual Japanese celebration Tanabata, also known as the “Star Festival” , that takes place on July 7th. Leading up to this day, wishes are written on colourful strips of paper called tanzaku and hung on bamboo branches in the hopes that the heavens will grant the wishes.
Find our Tanabata craft tent, and decorate your own tanzaku or write your wishes to leave for display on our site until July 7th. To learn more about Tanabata visit this blog post here.
Heritage Lawn Games
Have some old-fashioned fun with a variety of heritage lawn games available for all ages on our festival field (weather permitting).
