Join us at the Steveston Tram for Doors Open Richmond as we reveal the mysteries and surprises of Tram Car 1220’s restoration and see Richmond’s tram in a new light.
Talk with our experienced Interpreters to uncover the detailed work that went into bringing Tram Car 1220 back to life, from replicating bronze grab handles for seats through to using steam boxes and horse hair to perfect the roof.
On Saturday June 8 at 10am to 2pm and Sunday, June 9 at 10am to 1pm, meet the volunteers who worked on the Tram Car 1220 restoration project in 2017 and 2018. They will answer questions about their experiences and talk about the work they performed on making Tram Car 1220 look so beautiful today.
Families can enjoy hands-on activities throughout the weekend. Grab a copy of our popular scavenger hunt and explore Tram Car 1220 and the surrounding Tram Room exhibits. See if your eye is better than a machine at finding the red colour of Tram Car 1220 with our colour matching game. Touch the materials that make up the roof (including the horse hair) with our touch table.
Kids – try your hand at being a “metal restorer”. Carefully dust metal using the same kind of brushes our restoration volunteers used. Then discover why we relied on black tea and wooden sticks to remove rust from metal… and try your hand at using the very same things to restore a railway spike!
