Culture Days: Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration

Step into the rich history and vibrant traditions of the Mid-Autumn Festival at the Chinese Bunkhouse, located within Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site. From September 17–29, join us Tuesdays to Sundays, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, for an immersive cultural experience.

Also known as the Mooncake Festival or Moon Festival, this annual holiday celebrates family, the harvest, and the beauty of the full moon. Observed on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, the festival is celebrated across many parts of Asia and features customs such as family gatherings, moon gazing, the sharing of mooncakes, and the lighting of lanterns.

Visitors can drop in to try out a fun activity – create their own paper red lantern, a symbol of good fortune, light, and prosperity. This is a perfect way to connect with the essence of the Mid-Autumn Festival and bring a piece of this vibrant cultural heritage home with you.

Richmond Carvers Showcase
Sunday, September 29, 12:00 – 4:00 pm
For one day only, join us at the Murakami Boatworks to witness the intricate art of wood carving in action. Skilled artisans from the Richmond Carvers Society will be on-site to demonstrate their craft, sharing the rich history, tools, and techniques behind their creations.

The Richmond Carvers Society, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to advancing woodworking as both a hobby and an art form. Their showcase offers a unique chance to watch craftsmanship unfold and gain insights into this timeless art.
