Crystal S Project – Supporting the Stern

Main Stern framing assembled with temporary bracing structure removed
An Update from the Crystal S Restoration Project

Shipwright Dave Sharp shares how he continues to form and install the stern for the Crystal S project.

After lofting and dry fitting the upper ring pieces on the floor, they were assembled on to the temporary framework of the Crystal S. Made from yellow cedar, this portion was attached using original bolts donated from Sakamoto Boat Works.

Now the knee, a piece that helps support the stern, is being rebuilt.

Take a look below to see the new stern knee versus what it looked like before. Next, vertical planking, or pickets which are supported by a pair of horizontal oak ribs, will be installed to connect the upper and lower ring timber structures.

Tools like the “rabbet plane” are being used to help make rabbet notches which accept the ends of the pickets.
